Another pointless sacking!
So Martin O'Neill is the latest Premiership Manager to lose his job after Sunderland lost to runaway leaders Manchester United. I doubt it was the fact that they lost to the Champions elect; they've been in freefall for quite a while now.
But what is the point in sacking the former Celtic boss at this time of the season?
A new Manager can't bring in anyone new and has to work with the same players O'Neill had.
Reading and Southampton have both done the same thing recently; only at the end of the season will we see if it was the right decision.
Maybe it’s coincidence but boards might be panicking as the Sky money gets huge next year. Some reports say it’s three billion pounds; that's crazy money it really is!
So who will take over at the Stadium of Light?
As a short term solution, get ex boss Peter Reid in until the end of the season. He knows the club inside out and Niall Quinn and the board know what they are getting.
If they are looking long term, then how about a former Champions League winning Manager, Roberto di Matteo. He knows the Premiership well and would jump at the chance to get back in Management.
I doubt they'd put in anyone untried at the top level but if they did it may be crowd favourite Kevin Phillips. His love and passion for the North East giants can't be questioned.
A good outside bet would be Gus Poyet. He has quietly got on with his job at Brighton and once again he's having a good season.
Whoever they appoint has to be right as losing their Premiership status would be a right kick in the balls.
