Is the marriage of Everton and David Moyes heading for divorce? By Gregg Halsey
After such a great start to the 2012/2013 campaign it seems as though Everton’s train is finally running out of steam and people are beginning to see kinks in the armour as the war for European football heats up.
Now anyone who knows football knows Everton are usually the slow starters who then pick up some momentum and finish in the top half and have a decent enough cup run to keep people happy.
This season however things do not seem to be as they should, Everton charged through the starting gates and haven’t left the top half of the table, beating Manchester United in the teams’ first fixture of the new campaign, and they went on a good run of results with 9 wins 9 draws and only 4 defeats (1 in the cup) up to the end of December things were looking good.
So the second half of the season began in January; 4 wins 2 draws (no issues) February ;1 win, 2 draws, 2 defeats ( a few murmurs) March 3-1 win against struggling Reading (happy days) crash out of the F.A. cup quarter finals 0-3 home defeat against struggling Wigan Athletic…
All of sudden there is uproar at Goodison Park, the tabloids, the pundits, the Everton ‘faithful’ all putting their two pence worth in “Moyes needs to move on” “once again we’re struggling to get over the last hurdle”.
I’m sorry, have I missed something here? Did Bill Kenwright give David a massive sum of cash that he has squandered on a bunch of over rated has-beens (like Mark Hughes did at QPR) and paid them ridiculous wages? Did David Moyes let the big names leave the club even though there was no need to for financial gain? Erm… NO!!!!!!!!
Before David Moyes, Everton were known for a few things in the modern day footballing world, Neville Southall, Duncan Ferguson, being Liverpool’s poor step brother, relegation candidates (before a ball got kicked), Walter Smith, Joe Royal oh and they won the FA cup in 1995…
When David Moyes took over in 2002 they were looking destined for relegation, since then he against the odds has got them to an FA cup final, took them to qualifying stage of the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, and other than the brief dark moment of the 39 point finish of the 2003-2004 season he has established them as a top half team within the English Premier League.
So Everton this season have lost a total of 7 matches in all competitions and all of a sudden David Moyes should be looking to move on?
Well David with supporters like this why stay around?
Perhaps you already were contemplating taking a look at a new challenge but you shouldn’t be being pushed and told you’ve not progressed a club that should have gone in to administration or bust years ago especially with your win percentage of above 40% and becoming only the fourth manager in Premier League history to achieve 150 wins (after Sir Alex, Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp).
David Moyes is in my opinion one of the best in the modern game, and will go down as one of the best of all time…
You decide when you move on but if this marriage has gone stale file for a divorce sir before your name and career gets tarnished with a sacking (that isn’t warranted).
