Should Championship players be called into the England squad?

As any professional footballer knows if you play at the top level, unless it’s a top six side on a regular basis, there is always the chance of relegation. This would not only affect the players’ wages but their internationals chances as well!

Now many would seek a move back to a Premiership club but that doesn’t always happen so they ply their trade in the Championship. The best way to help themselves, their teammates as well as the fans, is for them to play well and hope for a return as quick as possible.

So if they are on the top of their game in the second tier of English football don’t they deserve a chance at international level?

A player that has scored goals for fun at any club he’s been at is Jermaine Defoe; one of the modern game’s great goal scorers. He has proved on the international stage that he has what it takes yet he can’t get a place in the Tottenham Hotspur side after the millions the club spent during the summer. AVB has only started him in the Europa League, Defoe has done what he does best and scored goals; but when it comes to the Premiership he’s lucky if he gets a place on the bench!

So would a move to a Championship club suit him? Harry Redknapp has a long history with Defoe and they both know what they get. The Queens Park Rangers boss is looking to booster his attack with two of his three strikers out injured.  His job is an immediate return to the Promised Land and he knows Defoe will score the goals they need. But it’s ‘World Cup season,’ and like any player, that’s where he wants to be; he won’t be looked at in the Championship so the move won’t happen.

A goalkeeper that is under Harry’s charge is former England number one Robert Green. In eight League games this season he has only conceded two goals, his last six games he’s had clean sheets, a great record at any level. So what are the chances of the former West Ham stopper getting a place on the plane to Rio?

Even if, as expected, Harry leads the West London club back to the top table Rob Green will have the summer off; he won’t be looked at as he is a Championship goalkeeper.

A player Harry signed last season is French front man Loic Remy; despite the club’s failure to stay at the top league of English football, the pacey forward showed he could score goals.

As mentioned earlier it’s ‘World Cup season,’ and he asked the club if he could go out on loan to a Premiership club and Newcastle got him for the year; he knew that if he played in the Championship this season of all seasons his World Cup dream would be over.

When players move it’s more often than not to do with money or just wanting regular football; if they are playing better than anyone else in that position they should be called up even if it is the Championship!
