Survival Sunday
On Sunday afternoon Queens Park Rangers take on Wigan Athletic at Loftus Road in a game that if the Londoners lose they are surely down.
The Latics have a seven point gap between them and their relegation rivals.
Roberto Martinez and his side are seasoned campaigners in fighting the drop. Harry Redknapp is used to fighting for a top ten space.
It’s amazing to think that every season Wigan wait till the last fifteen games to really start putting points on the board and yet every season they seem to do it.
QPR have had a season to forget! Mark Hughes promised the world and delivered nothing! He put together a side that just didn't work and didn't seem to have a plan B. Tony Fernandes had no choice but to show him the door. He may have left it too late as Harry Redknapp took over. In twelve games Hughes took four points and they were all draws; his successor has done much better but maybe was brought in a little too late.
Will being a team used to battling for survival give Wigan an advantage?
In many ways it does; they won't hit the panic button if the game plan goes wrong.
QPR should have got something out of their game at Craven Cottage on Monday night but going three goals behind is always a big ask for any side.
The thing that could decide this game is where it’s played. QPR at a passionate Loftus Road is a hard place to win at and with the little following Wigan take away the noise will all be made by the West Londoners.
Wigan players may have one eye on the FA Cup semi Final at Wembley in a week’s time.
It’s Survival Sunday and whatever team loses it will be a kick in the balls.
